Since November 1, 2008 several of the Starbucks stores in and around Memphis, TN (including Southaven, MS) have been participating in their second annual "Scoops for Troops" project. This year the recipient of the bags of coffee donated, mostly by local patrons of the stores, is 3rd BCT, 1st ID, 6-4 Cavalry. I want to thank all of the patrons who participated as well as so many of the employees who donated as well. And special thanks to Mike (the District Manager) and to Dana, Christine and Lane. Since many of the remote outposts where the coffee is being shipped have little or no electricity Dana, Chrisine and Lane (along with employees from other stores) spent countless hours grinding the coffee so it will be "ready to go" when it arrives in Afghanistan.
I have been touched by the fact that the majority of the bags have hand written notes on them. Unfortunately I didn't even think to take photos until we were almost finished bagging and packing all of the bags but here are a few:
The final photo post above is the last 120+ lbs being readied for shipment.
Our hope is that the coffee will help to keep the Soldiers warm as they drink it and will let them know that they ARE thought about and supported while on this dangerous deployment.
Again, MANY thanks to the Starbucks managers, employees and patrons.
Several of the Starbucks stores in the Memphis metro area are having drives to collect coffee for the 6/4 CAV currently deployed to northeastern Afghanistan. I received an email today with photos of the first shipment being repacked for delivery out to the remote firebases and outposts. Many thanks to the store manager, Dana, and all of the patrons of the Starbucks in Southaven, MS who donated for this particular shipment
Enjoy!
